Maybe you want to buy a new bed, but you don’t know what size that mattress was. Or you have the old mattress frame, but you don’t know what mattress size fits that frame. We’re going to list the various sizes for each mattress type along with their standard dimensions. We’ll also discuss which mattress size may be best for you.
Crib Mattresses
The standard crib mattress is 27 inches by 52 inches or 68.5 cm by 132 cm. Bassinet and Moses basket mattresses are smaller, but there isn’t a uniform set of dimensions for them.
Twin Mattresses
Twin mattresses are the most common beds used with children. In fact, your child’s toddler bed probably has a twin mattress in it, once they’ve grown out of a crib. Twin beds are 39 inches by 75 inches or 96.5 cm by 190.5 cm.
The small single mattress is a little smaller than the twin mattress. It is roughly 30 inches by 75 inches. But unless you’re putting a mattress on a cot or in an RV bunk, you won’t deal with a bed this size.
Twin XL Mattresses
Twin XL mattresses are designed to meet the needs of growing teenagers. They are 39 inches wide like conventional twin mattresses. However, they are an additional five inches long for an 80 inch length.
Full Mattresses
Full mattresses are much larger than a twin bed, though they’re still designed for a single occupant. That’s why they may be called a standard double mattress. The standard full sized mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long or 134.5 cm by 190.5 cm. This means they are as long as a standard twin bed but not quite as wide as two twin sized beds pushed side to side. This may be the best option if your bedroom doesn’t have room for a queen sized bed.
There is a full XL mattress out there, though it is hard to find. These beds are 54 inches by 80 inches. In fact, whenever you see XL in the mattress description, add 5 inches to the standard length to know how long it is. You can find the best mattress size dimensions using reference sites, allowing you to compare the appearance and space requirements of various mattresses at a glance.
Queen Sized Beds
Queen sized beds are a viable option for couples who sleep close to each other. They are also a decent choice for heavier individuals who aren’t comfortable on a full mattress. The standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. Note that this is 5 inches longer than a twin and the same length as a twin XL mattress.
The Olympic queen is 66 inches by 80 inches. You get a little more width than a queen-sized bed, but it has the same length as a standard queen mattress.
King Sized Beds
The standard king sized bed is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long or 193 cm by 303.5 cm. This is the best choice for couples who need a little more space.
You can also get the California king or Super King mattress. These mattresses are a little narrower and longer. They are 72 inches wide but 84 inches long. This makes California king beds a good choice for tall people.
These mattresses are very popular, accounting for around a fifth of all mattresses sold. And they’re the most common mattress found in hotels.
