Nine summers ago, the son of a rural school superintendent stepped into a 14-acre hayfield in Flippin, Arkansas. Alongside his lifelong friend and Forrest L. Wood’s grandson, Keith Daffron, he began marking the footprint of what would become a state-of-the-art Vexus boat manufacturing facility.

Today, Lance Newton serves as Vice President of Operations for Vexus Boats, guiding nearly 200 teammates who build some of the most respected fishing vessels in the world. His leadership is grounded in efficiency, craftsmanship, and a deep belief in treating people with respect and appreciation.

“I can’t help but be proud of the fact we literally started Vexus from the ground up by pounding PVC stakes in the ground that summer day, and have turned it into one of the most respected fishing boat brands in the world, while working with friends and family,” says Newton.

A Leader with a Heart for Service

When autumn settles over the Ozark Mountains, Newton turns his attention to a cherished tradition: designing the annual Vexus Christmas ornament. Nearly 500 ornaments are laser cut and mailed to partners, employees, and community members, each accompanied by a card signed by numerous teammates.

“It’s something we’ve been doing since our first Christmas at Vexus for all of our employees, boat dealers, industry partners, and even the local community,” says Newton. “Everybody seems to love getting one, so now it’s an expected and fun tradition.”

This year’s ornament features a leaping largemouth bass with the Vexus logo incorporated into the eye, displayed alongside previous designs resting on the original CAD blueprints Newton created for the Vexus facility.

Designing Boats with Purpose and Precision

“We based the factory design on our long-term production goals. Our goal is not to build the most boats, but instead, to build the best boats,” says Newton. With decades of boat-building experience informing each decision, the team continuously improves every new model.

Outside the factory, Newton enjoys dragging a football jig on Bull Shoals and pheasant hunting with close friends. But his commitment to servant leadership remains constant.

“I think to be a great leader, you’ve got to be a great listener, as well as a great servant,” says Newton. “I’m here to make the lives of our employees and boat buying customers better through compassionate guidance.”

A Legacy Built on Service and Craftsmanship

Nearly a decade after that day in the hayfield, Newton’s words ring true. The premium vessels produced by Vexus—and the ornaments decorating the trees of friends and partners—reflect both his innovative spirit and his generous character.
