BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. – As forecasted, the BAM Tournament Trail Bass Boat Technologies Super 60 launched on Lake Mohave for their first day of competition under sunny skies in a mid-90 degree day and by day’s end Christian Ostrander of Turlock, Calif had moved into an early lead with the biggest five-fish limit, weighing in at 21.49. His total keeper count was 17 scorable bass.
“This is my second time here (at Mohave) and the first time I was here, a couple years back, I never caught a bass,” said Ostrander. “What changed, is that the last couple years I got really good at a spinning rod and did a lot of ‘scopin’.”

Ostrander credited his catches to a silver-colored, scented Berkley Flat Worm.
“Little smallies love it,” he shared. “I had never smallmouth fished much and last year, I fished a tournament on St. Clair, and I was there for a week, dialed in the spinning rod, and everything smallmouth fishing. I came here and did exactly the same bait, same weight and same rod, everything.”
Pierson Lands 24 Keepers

In 2nd place overall with 20.02; and first place by a keeper count of 24, Randy Pierson of Oakdale, Calif. went into the first day of Mohave with the thought of ‘just goin’ fishin’.
“I caught fish on four different baits and hopefully got onto a little pattern,” he said. “I caught everything I could and was hoping when I caught, one there would be good ones mixed in. It turned out there was. Just like Pedro, I was goin’ for both (heaviest bag and most scorable bass). This is only my second tournament fishing this format, so I am still managing it – so, I’m just goin’ for both.”
Three of the four lures in Pierson’s mixed bag of baits had one thing in common and he felt it made a big difference in his success.
“I am using a Spearpoint GP Finesse 2/0 hook,” he said. “It is a pretty good size hook and makes (even the plastics) fall a little bit quicker.”
Day Two Will Likely Be Limited
Speculation of 20-plus mph winds are forcing the possibility of only a half day of fishing for Day Two. Both anglers are prepared for the restriction with the goal of qualifying for the Day Three field cut where the top-10 will fish Championship Sunday, each vying for a grand prize of $50,000.
“I dig it,” Ostrander said. “I’m going to run around, where I know some fish are and in four hours, I can catch a little 17 or 18 (pounds) and we will end this Sunday.”
Pierson also plans to stick with his current game plan.
“Late in the day (on Friday), I went lookin’ for a couple things out of the wind and ended up catchin a 3 ½,” Pierson shared. “That made me feel better to expand, if it really blew.”
