BAM Pro Tour Heads to the Oroville Afterbay

A current Oroville heat advisory is expected  to lift for the blast off of the next Bass Boat Technologies televised BAM Pro Tour stop at the Thermalito Afterbay presented by Tackle Warehouse along with the Oroville Chamber of Commerce and the Gold Country Casino.

oroville gold country casino The three-day event, launching on September 20 will be the 4th and final regular season event available to the Pro Tour anglers for qualification in the 2024 Tournament of Champions (TOC), set to take place on the tidal waters of the California Delta later this year.

With the imposed 31 day off-limits and the extreme temperature swing at the Oroville fishery, anglers may find themselves challenged by the less commonly fished body of water. A previous visit to the venue gave Strike King Pro angler Billy Hines of Vacaville, Calif. some insight in the multi-species habitat called an Angler’s Haven.

“I caught fish all kinds of ways – flippin’, pitchin’, punchin’ a Strike King Rage Bug – fishing tules; but then I caught some offshore too, so I think we will be able to catch ‘em anyway we want,” shared Hines. “It will be about what YOU like to do AND which areas don’t have six boats on them.”

Tules were a focus for Hines. “I could catch several fish off a patch; but then I cold go to the next one and not catch one; so, it is going to depend on who lands on the patch where they are biting and who is going to have to look a little harder,” he shared.

Fans can join and cheer on their favorite angler at the venue or watch live starting with the pre-game show hosted by Mark Lassagne and Big Ed Everhart followed by the live weigh in. Stay Tuned.

Media is welcome to attend. Filming is allowed, angler interviews are allowed and encouraged, interviews with the BAM staff are also encouraged.

He expects the fluctuating water levels to challenge the bite. “It kind of reminded me of the Delta, because of the high and low water that can change by feet,” he shared. “Because of that sometimes you can get under the causeway and sometimes you cannot. The water level changes where the grass can be up above or below the surface level. Water level will affect whether your using your Garmin FFS, or tossing a Strike King Sexy Frog , Popping Frog or even Sexy Dog may work better.

“And because they are letting in water and dropping water, there is current ripping through there. It makes it fish different – not exactly like the Delta, but not like a lake either. It has the challenges of both.”

Hines’ time on the water revealed most fish in the 3- to 5-pound class, with more in the former range. “But I did see some big ones out there; that’s for sure,” he added. “There wasn’t any rhyme or reason to where I caught the fives. I caught ‘em punchin’ and offshore with a Frenzy Nail and Finesse Worm; so, literally you can catch ‘em however you like to catch ‘em.”

He predicted a 15- to 18- pound bag would be a good weight each day; but anticipates 18-pounds or more a day to win. “Someone could get on a really good patch and get a 20-pound sack; but average for the three-days, I would think would be closer to 18,” he said.

The 30 competitors of the televised BAM Pro Tour will blast off and weigh-in at the Thermalito Park Ramp each day.
