Being an outdoors adventurer usually means that you have a soft spot for nature, and probably care about sustainability and taking care of the planet and our limited natural resources. Reducing waste and living sustainably is important for preserving the environment and making an impact to reduce climate change, and this doesn’t only apply to our everyday lives! Living sustainably in every aspect is important, including your adventuring. Here are some swaps to make and advice to make your trips more eco-friendly.
Solar Energy
Many seasoned campers, fishermen, hikers and other adventurers have already learned that having a power source is kind of a necessity in this day and age. We need to keep phones and GPS devices charged to stay on the grind and in contact with our loved ones, we may need to make use of heaters or coolers and most importantly, some of us need to cook! Having a generator is a great way to camp out comfortably, but burning all that fuel isn’t great for the environment. Opting for a solar generator is a way to enjoy your power while still being kind to the planet. As a renewable energy source, solar is a great way to achieve this. With a solar generator, panels and a portable solar panel stand, you’ll be good to go with green, clean energy on all your trips.
Keep It Reusable
When you’re already roughing it outdoors, taking the easy route in some regards can feel tempting. That might mean you’ll lean towards pre-packaged snacks like bars, plastic water and soda bottles, paper plates and cups, plastic cutlery and other items that can easily be tossed in the garbage. This may be a convenient way to go, but we all know that single-use plastics can have a harmful impact on the planet. Try to bring along food in reusable containers, and your own dishes, cups and cutlery from home to wash up after use and take back home. There are even some great dinnerware sets designed specifically for camping trips too. The extra cleaning up work may be annoying, but the planet and your wallet will both thank you for it.
Clean Up Properly
Disposing of the waste you inevitably do have to create is the next important step to take. This means there are a few things you’ll need to take note of. First of all, since you’ll be washing up your dishes instead of using paper ones, you’ll need to invest in a biodegradable dish soap that won’t be harmful to the plant life around you, and dispose of your dirty dishwater as far away from other water sources as you can (preferably by burying it in a hole). You’ll also want to be careful of how you dispose of human waste – nope you can’t bury toilet paper. If there are no outhouse facilities near your campsite, you’re going to need to bury your waste and clean up using a towel. It may not sound fun, but it’s all in the name of respecting your environment and the wildlife around you.
