Bass Tournament in Morocco

lifetyle The inaugural Black Bass No Kill International Fishing Event at Tamri Lake successfully cements Morocco as a fishing destination full of promise and lively fish. The largest catch was 51cm by Sylvain “Le Dentiste” Bidot from France. The overall title was taken by local Youssef Essamlani with a total of 15 bass larger than 30cm.

The Opening Ceremony on Friday 14th October was a very dignified affair with high ranking officials in attendance showing their support of such a progressive initiative. Moha the celebrity chef prepared a buffet promoting “Menu Bon pour la Climat” a great concept promoting the advantages of cooking locally sourced foods. The Vie Aquatique Artshow, inspired by the Louvine Collective, and the Exhibition from the national photo competition sparked many discussions between the officials, tourism industry and anglers, about how fishing tourism can benefit the local economy, the central focus of this event.

“Morocco is unbelievable beautifpodiumul, very friendly, but also fragile. So this kind of event and awareness for sustainable tourism and fishing is very important for this country.” says Rasmus Tikkanen one of the artists behind the Vie Aquatique Artshow.

The lake at Tamri is a magnificent location and on Saturday the 15th October under the pristine blue skies the fish were on the bite, providing the optimal conditions for the competitors. With a total of 232 fish above 30cm caught and released during this one day, the notion and importance of “No Kill” fishing was highlighted and explained on National Television.

In the end the locals used their home knowledge to their benefit, creating an all Moroccan podium. First place Youssef Essamlani spodiumummed up the atmosphere brilliantly, “I am very happy. I dedicate this win to all my friends here today, we are all very proud to support “No Kill” fishing in Morocco.”

An elated Syvlain “Le Dentiste” Bidot adds, “I am extremely happy to have caught the biggest of the day, for me this is the only criteria that matters! It also shows how much potential there is in this lake, I wonder how many Bass larger than 51cm there are!”

This event marks the start of a new strategy for the promotion of fishing tourism in Morocco. The Director of Fisheries at the High Commission for Water and Forests of Morocco, Badr Lammri, is now focusing his attention of the future, “This event was a great success. The next step is to offer fishing holidays focusing on our unique and diverse landscapes. We aim to make the Agadir region one of the leading Black Bass fishing destinations in the African continent by 2020”.
