A Look inside the 2016 Cabela’s School of the Year

alabama college bass fishingThis week we start a multi-part series looking into what it took for the University of Alabama Bass Team to win the 2016 Cabela’s School of Year title.   We talked to numerous members of the team about this past season in order to get a broad perspective on their strategies, goals, determination, and team work – clearly, all these things together, earned the University of Alabama Bass Team their well-deserved place atop of the Cabela’s School of the Year race!

“Was there a key moment during the 2016 college bass fishing season that you can pinpoint that was key for the team to be able to take control of the Cabela’s School of Year Race?”

John Davis, President of the Bass Club and Senior said, “I think the B.A.S.S Regional on Lake Martin was a major turning point for the race. Payton McGinnis and I finished second, and had two more teams in the top 10 to really move us up and secure our place in the SOY race. The moment that really sealed the deal was finishing 6th and 8th at the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship. It stayed tight until the very end, but that finish, while we were already in the lead, really gave us the confidence to finish it out strong.” Payton McGinnis also shared the same feelings saying, “Finishing 6th at the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship on Pickwick and having another team finish 8th. We were in the lead going into that tournament and having 2 teams finish in the top 10 helped us stay in the lead with only a few more School of the Year tournaments left.”
