McClure’s 13lb monster slams door on Central Valley Angler of the Year Race

Any way you want to put it, the “Hero to Zero” or “Zero to Hero” phrase is still the best way to describe just how humbling or exhilarating the sport of competitive bass fishing can be.

That is to say, that an angler can be “on a roll” catching good fish in practice – and come game day, it may all go down in flames. Conversely, you can be on nothing, get to the event, “just go fishing” and end up being the talk of the town.

In the case of Mike Barnard/Robert Riley and Stan Prickett/Bill Santini, central region teams who were in a virtual tie for the Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour Angler of the year title, both had amazing “hero” years, leaving each to wonder if the final deciding event held last weekend on Lake McClure would be the one that would bring their productive streaks to a grinding halt and allow the “zero” factor to pop up like a proverbial Jack in the Box.

When all was said and done however, both teams made a good showing with Prickett and Santini posting a respectable five-fish 10 pound limit. But it was not nearly enough to take over the lead, as Barnard and Riley, brought in a five fish limit of bass that went an amazing 19 pounds, and featured a 13 pound monster that will go down as the biggest bass ever caught in a FPT central region event, allowing them to capture the prestigious Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour Angler of the Year title in commanding fashion.

Congratulations Mike and Robert on a fantastic year…you have earned it, and deserve to be named the best and most consistent amateur bass fishing team in west!

This Saturday’s “Delta Showdown” to settle Northern Region AOY title

The race for the FPT’s northern region’s

In doing so, they have experienced an incredible amount of success this year and are in site of making Future Pro Tour history and becoming the first team to ever capture both the FPT Classic title and the Angler of the Year title. The difficulty for them in capturing the northern region AOY title is in the fact that neither angler is very familiar with the lakes in the northern region. They have, simply put, done their homework, and showed up ready for battle at each and every event, the result of which has put them within a whisper of the northern region Angler of the Year title.

But current leaders Justin Nelson and Tony Koregolos are having none of it, and aren’t buying into the hype. “If they even dream of coming into this region and taking our title, they need to wake up andapologize”, joked Justin in a playful tone. Seriously though, we have much respect for Paul and Rudy, and are happy to be facing the best; as if you want to be considered the best…you have to beat the best”.

The stage for this showdown won’t be at the OK Corral however, but will be at Ladd’s Marina this Saturday on the California delta which is also the last event of the 2012 season. And you can be sure that anglers will leave it all on the water as they slug it out for one of the 45 coveted berths available within this region at this year’s Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour Classic championship – which will be held November 3-4th,on the Sacramento River and the California delta.

This weekend’s event is a full-day 8-hour event, and if you have never fished a Future Pro Tour event, have always wanted to try it out, or simply could not fish much this year for whatever reason, this is a great opportunity for you to come “check it out” as limited membership fees of just $5 per angler will be available at the Ladds Marina ramp the morning of the event beginning at 4:30am.

It’s on and crackin!…as everything is set for a great event and a dramatic finish to what has been a great 10th year anniversary season for the Future Pro Tour tournament Trails.

We look forward to seeing you all this weekend on the California delta!
