Maui Jim® Becomes First to Launch Prescription Polarized Single Gradient Sunglasses

Maui Jim’s aloha spirit may appear relaxed and casual, but when it comes to innovating new lens technologies, the company is fierce and tenacious in its pursuits. As a result of years of research, the company will debut the world’s first polarized prescription single gradient sunglass lenses for single vision or progressive.
Available from authorized Maui Jim optical retail accounts, the new prescription MauiGradient™ lenses use the company’s proprietary MauiPassport™ technologies that produce digitally-compensated free-form lenses that result in wider, clearer and more vivid views.
MauiGradient lenses have a darker tinting at the top that gradually gets lighter as it moves down the lens. With this technology, an appropriate amount of light is allowed to filter through certain areas, while less light comes through where protection is paramount.
“It has taken us some time to master the proprietary tinting film on our prescription MauiGradient lenses,” said Paul Ponder, manag er of Maui Jim’s 25,000 square foot digital lens lab. “When you combine the unique nature of this film, with our Freeform® digital engineering process, you get a lens that offers the best optics in the industry. In fact, equipment manufacturers come to our lab to test products because our systems are more precise than any other lab.”
Each lens has nine layers of patented PolarizedPlus2® technology to cut 99.9 percent of glare from above, below and behind each lens and block 100 percent of harmful UV rays. The polarized protection covers the entire lens. Only Maui Jim lenses use three rare earth elements to significantly enhance colors seen through the lenses. Additionally, Maui Jim’s nine layers of protection also include waterproof and oleophobic coatings and a CLEARSHELL® scratch-resistant treatment.
In the manufacturing process, prescription MauiGradient lenses go through 22 separate manufacturing steps and are inspected six times throughout the process to ensure quality. Unique to Maui Jim is that the engineering process is customized to compensate for each individual prescription. “We are the only company that not only accounts for the unique aspects of a patient’s prescription, but also adjusts the digital manufacturing to the precise measurements of our frames,” added Ponder. “This is how we are able to produce the clearest, edge-to-edge optics; and our accuracy is six times better than a conventional lab. Less than one percent of jobs are returned for manufacturing errors. This is the lowest return rate in the industry.”
All prescription MauiGradient lenses use Maui Evolution® 1.60 lens material that is designed for active lifestyles. These lenses afford the benefits of SuperThin glass combined with the impact-resistant properties of polycarbonate lenses. There are four lens color options: Neutral Grey for bright, sunny days; HCL® Bronze for variable light conditions; Maui HT™, a high performance lens; and Maui Rose™ for fast moving sports. Customers are able to identify authentic Maui Jim lenses by logo in the upper right lens of their glasses.
Clear Prescription Lenses are also Greener Lenses
The lens manufacturing process at Maui Jim produces between 120,000 and 150,000 pounds of waste materials annually, but none of it ends up in landfills. “We have custom designed our system so that all of our waste product is recycled,” said Ponder. “We were the first ones to have a lab where all of our fluids and petroleums are reused; and our solids are remanufactured into other products. Our system is cleaner than conventional lens manufacturing systems. This means we have less downtime, so we are able to process orders and repairs more quickly.”
Warranties with Aloha Spirit
All of the MauiGradient styles and lenses are insured by the company’s standard two-year warranty that is considered one of the best in the eyewear industry. Prescription MauiGradient sunglasses meet ANSI, EN or AS standards. Whether sunglasses require a quick fix or major overhaul, the repair center is committed to providing a fast turnaround at a reasonable price. “The customer service department is the largest department in our company,” said Harry Rhodes, vice president of sales at Maui Jim. “We don’t want our customers to be without their glasses for too long because most of them love them too much! We strive to get your glasses back to you within only a few days from the time that they arrive in our lab.” Prescription lenses that are in need of repair should be returned to their place of purchase. Prescri ption frame repairs may be sent directly to Maui Jim by following the instructions on the company’s website.
Prescription MauiGradient Styles
Maui Jim’s single gradient lenses are available in most of the company’s RXable styles that use the Maui Evolution lens, including one of the eyewear industry’s largest collections of aviator frames. New aviator styles include Hideaways, Mavericks, Baby Beach, Wiki Wiki and Cliff House.
