Agribusiness interest in the Central Valley who want more Delta water sent to their part of the State are behind the government push for eradication of the Striped Bass. They will not acknowledge that fresh water shortages in the Delta, resulting from years of excessive water pumping by the State and Federal Water Pumps in Tracy, are the primary cause for declines in native fish and Striped Bass populations. Instead they falsely blame the decline of the Delta Smelt and predation by the Striped Bass.
The Striped Bass was introduced to the Delta as a desired species over 120 years ago. And numerous fisheries scientists have testified in Sacramento over the last three years that increasing Striped Bass catch limits will actually cause an increase in the Striped Bass population. Fishermen have also known that King Salmon and Striped Bass co-existed in the Delta successfully until water exports doubled over the last fifteen years and that the best way to restore Delta fisheries is for water flows to be restored to the Delta.
Restore the Delta is therefore asking you to support our local recreation economy by supporting the Water 4 Fish Striped Bass campaign. Water 4 Fish is a statewide fishing organization dedicated to protecting Delta flows for Salmon and Stripers alike.
Follow the link below to make your voice heard to elected officials. Tell them that Striped Bass are essential to the Delta ecosystem, our economy, and our way of life. Tell them to stop making the Striped Bass into a red herring and that the best way to protect the Delta is restore water flows in and out of the Delta. Let them know too that the peripheral canal or tunnel is an equally bad idea because it will dewater the Delta permanently.
