Shawn Dalrymple

ArmyBassAngler COALITION PRO Shawn Dalrymple helps lead the University of North Alabama Bass Fishing Team  TO A 3rd place finish at the BoatU.S. Collegiate Championship Series Pepsi Open.

For the third straight year, the BoatU.S. Collegiate Championship Series held the Pepsi Open on Kentucky Lake. The event was held June 29-30 out on Paris Landing. This is the only national collegiate event that has a true team format. Over sixty of the best teams across the country competed in this two day event. The best two weights from each 3 boat team were used each day to determine the total team weight.

ArmyBassAngler Coalition Pro Shawn Dalrymple fished this event as a member of the University of North Alabama’s Bass Fishing team. This was Shawn’s last event as a team member. This marked the completion of two years of competition through various events representing the University while earning his Master of Business Administration degree.  Prior to the start of the event Shawn presented the BoatU.S. Championship Series with a flag that was flown over Bagram, Afghanistan in April 2008. Shawn also spoke at the National Championship in Texas where he had finished 28th out 150. This flag allowed Shawn to leave a lasting military presence for future events and to say thank you for all BoatU.S. has done for College fishing.

Day one of the event was the first day that storms had not rolled through the area. Every day of practice was hampered by heavy thunderstorms. The heavy storms had forced the water level to rise and very little current to be generated on the main river. This change in water condition proved to be very difficult for most anglers to figure out. Shawn and his fellow UNA anglers proved they had unlocked the secret to the event. Early day one Team members from the UNA team caught  two key fish for the team. One was the third largest fish for the entire tournament. Shawn and fellow Army Officer 2LT Ryan Salzman and, ArmyBassAnglers newest Coalition Pro, provided a solid limit to round out the team’s day one total of 22.83 lbs. This was good enough for fourth place for the day.

Day two of the event was the first day that TVA had generated any significant amount of current. Shawn and Ryan took advantage of the current. The key to the day was patience. Shawn and Ryan caught well over a hundred and fifty fish but getting keepers was tough. They did not have a keeper until 10:30 a.m. and a limit until 12:00p.m. From that point the two of them continued to cull up to bring in one of the bigger limits of the day. Both boats from UNA lost 2 key fish that would have made a significant push for the win if landed. The team ended up taking third place in the nation. The final weight for the team was 39.45 lbs.

The success of the team, lead by ArmyBassAnglers Coalition Pros, at this event proved once again that UNA was the best team in the state of Alabama and the Southeast. UNA has had success each year of its existence with a Southern Collegiate Championship in 2009, a Match Series Championship 2010, and was barley beaten out for the 2011 Match Series Championship.  Shawn had this to say about the event, “The success we had was due to great use of map reading skills and Side and Down Scan imaging. The system eliminated a large amount of water and helped locate key schools of fish.”  All the team’s fish came from main river ledges from 12 to 25 feet of water on peanut butter and jelly football head jigs and a carolina rigged redbug trick worm.  “And most importantly, not only did we get a great opportunity to represent out State and School we got to share our Mission w/other anlgers on SUPPORT.DEFEND.FISH—HOOAH!”

The tournament will be aired during the month of August on Versus TV as part of the Collegiate Championship Series. Shawn will also be featured in several other events during the month on Versus TV which is part of NBC.
